04 Aug Getting A Better Understanding the different levels of Water Damage
Water damage can be categorized into three main types.
Water Lineup Busted
Water lines that are busted usually have a rupture in their drain waste. The ventilation (DWV), pipe will then carry gray water. This is usually a backup from a sewage system that sends biologically contaminated blackwater through a building.
A natural disaster, where seawater or brackish runoff floods the property, can also occur. These classifications are determined by the extent of water contamination responsible for the damage.
There are three water damage classifications.
Category 1These are usually broken distribution lines, irrigation processes, overflowing containers, and no contaminants. This is known as “fresh” water.
Category 2This is the area where water has a high level of contamination. It can potentially cause nausea and discomfort to people who come in contact with it. This water may contain unsafe levels of microorganisms, chemical or biological matter, and/or seepage from hydrostatic stress, ruptured storage tanks, or diluted bacteria. This is called “gray water”.
Kategorie 3This is the place where water is “grossly polluted” and contains harmful toxigenic and pathogenic agents. Raw sewage is the most common source of “black water” and can cause serious health problems for people and property damage if it is not fully remediated.
Black water can be caused by sanitary sewer backups or brackish water coming from streams and rivers, flooding of seawater, and any other natural ingress where contaminants like pesticides and heavy metallics are transported to buildings.
Don’t wait until it’s too late
Remember that water damage in particular areas can quickly escalate to a more serious level if it is not addressed immediately. Organic pathogens thrive in moist, warm, enclosed environments.
