15 Apr Don’t Clean Your Air Ducts If You Have Asbestos!
Commonly we do a lot of air duct cleaning for a lot of our clients, especially when they ha d mold concern, or after a fire damage. But just general maintenance, it’s a good idea to have your air ducts cleaned.
However, it is not a good idea to have you air ducts cleaned if you have asbestos contained material. (ACM). Asbestos contained material should be remediated or abated. Asbestos abatement should and can only be done by a certified asbestos abatement contractor. And typically it needs to be tested by a CAC, a Certified Asbestos Consultant. A certified asbestos consultant is different than a certified asbestos contractor.
They both work hand and hand with each other, and typically we would test the materials to make sure they have ACM content in them. Is it Asbestos contained material? How much is it? And how it it going to disposed of?
If it’s an air handling system, the air duct sits fairly cut and dry, but they should still be tested because the abatement company still wants the know what the percentage of it is, and how much work is involved.
So don’t be having your air ducts cleaned and don’t remove the air ducts if there is Asbestos contained material in the air ducts, boots or furnace.
