10 Jan Getting To Know the Primary Causes of Water Damage
Water damage is a common problem homeowners experience. Water damage occurs when water is left in contact for too long.
1 out of 4 homeowners claim water damage that is not weather-related. This means that 1 out 4 homeowners’ claims for water damage are due to faulty or leaking appliances, pipe leaks and sewage overflow.
Every year, one in 50 homeowners who have insurance in the United States files a claim due to water damage. Water damage can occur for many reasons, but the most important thing to do is to deal with it.
Be cautious:
- Common appliances include the installation of a leak detector close to water lines and under sinks.
- HVAC systems need to be maintained at least quarterly.
- You can quickly remove water by keeping a dry/wet vacuum handy.
- It is important to replace old supply lines with stronger and more reliable ones.
If water damage is not addressed promptly, it can lead to costly consequences.
WATER DAMAGE- A COMMON CAUSE
Appliance leakage can cause water damage and water accumulation on wood floors.
Water damage can make wood curl outwards if it isn’t obvious. This can result in a very unattractive appearance that can be difficult to replace.
- Leaching or bursting of pipes
- Clogging can result from negligence or poor plumbing.
- Water accumulation can occur in areas that are more likely to collect it such as crawl spaces, rain gutters and attics.
- Some household appliances can fail, such as water heaters.
- Problems with HVAC (Heating-Ventilating-Air Conditioning Units).
- Natural disasters and other weather-related water concerns
BURSTING PIPES / LEAKING PIPES
Two of the most common causes of water damage are leaking and burst pipes. Water can get behind walls and floors if these events are not noticed for a prolonged time.
Burst pipes can be caused by pressure buildup. Other potential disasters include rusty or non-functioning garbage disposals.
PLUMBING ISSUES
The majority of plumbing issues are not easy to detect and can only be found when it is too late. If pipes aren’t installed properly or are damaged during the course of an operation, it can cause financial disaster.
Two-story homes should be taken extra care as their pipes will run through the ceiling at the first floor.
PROBLEMS IN CRAWL SPACE, THE ATTIC, AND BASEMENT
Water damage can occur in crawl spaces, basements, and attics from easy water accumulations that may go undetected for long periods. These areas are also vulnerable to mold growth. Mold can thrive in damp and dark areas, eating away at structures.
PRODUCTS FOR FAULTY HOMEHOLD
Appliances can leak if they aren’t installed properly or simply from wear and tear. These problems can only be worsened if they’re not addressed immediately. Be aware of refrigerators, water heaters, as well as washing machines and dishwashers.
HVACS
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems need to be maintained at least quarterly. It’s better to call immediately if there are any problems than wait. If they’re lucky mold buildups and spores in their pipes will not cause a problem.
