Attics and basements are the most popular places to store valuable belongings. These are also the most susceptible to water damage. If you have a leaky roof or basement flooding, your attic will be in serious trouble. What are your options if your Long Beach home is short on storage?
Use Containers
Plastic containers are the best way to protect your items. Moving boxes are often made of cardboard and can be dangerous for your items. You should use moving boxes to transport items that are not in frequent use, such as clothes or pots and saucepans.
To keep rodents and moisture out of items that will be kept for a long time (e.g. holiday decorations) it is best to store them in plastic containers. Your items will still be protected even if the basement floods.
Photographs
While many people have a large collection of digital photos, there are still hardcopy photos that must be protected. The colors of a photo will be affected by water and will eventually bleed. In a matter of minutes, irreplaceable photos can be completely destroyed by water damage.
If you place photos together, with a piece tissue paper between them you can reduce the likelihood of them sticking to one another in moist air.
To ensure they are not in floodwater-contact, you should place them on a high shelf.
Stay off the Ground
You can keep stored items dry by keeping them off the ground. You can either put boxes on pallets, or build shelving in your storage space. Either way, you can keep your items above the ground and out of standing water.
Install shelving on walls. Make sure to screw in the studs. The drywall could be damaged if you store heavy items. To avoid tipping, bookcases should be secured to the wall when you place them in storage.
Dehumidifiers
A dehumidifier is a good investment if your basement or attic contains a lot of moisture. Flooding can happen occasionally, and can be fixed quickly. However, water damage can occur from the constant moisture in your air.
A dehumidifier can be used to prevent mold, mildew and bowing as well as other long-term problems.
